Asteroid buzzes Earth (early this afternoon); another one coming…

A small asteroid passed within the moon’s distance from the Earth on Wednesday morning, and another will do likewise later in the day, space watchers say.

The double encounter is an unusual event that shows the need for closer monitoring of near space for Earth-threatening encounters, according to NASA.

The objects don’t pose a threat to Earth, and they will not be visible to the naked eye, said Donald Yeomans, manager of NASA’s Near Earth Program, which tracks potentially hazardous asteroids and comets within 28 million miles of Earth.

The objects are visible from Earth as tiny specks of light with the help of moderately sized amateur telescopes, he said.

Near-Earth asteroid 2010 RX30, which is estimated to be 32 to 65 feet in diameter, passed within 154,000 miles of Earth at 5:51 a.m. ET Wednesday, the website PopFi.com confirmed.

Mafia goes Toxic !!!

The Cunsky is one of 32 vessels carrying toxic material that has been sunk by the mafia in the Mediterranean, according to the prosecutor’s office in Reggio Calabria. Italian authorities have discovered a ship that was sunk by the mafia off the coast of southern Italy with 120 barrels of radioactive waste on board, a local prosecutor said Monday. The 110-metre (360-feet) long ship was found on Saturday 500 metres (1,640 feet) under water and around 28 kilometres (17 miles) from the coast of Calabria, Paola city prosecutor Bruno Giordano told AFP. “For the moment, we do not know the origin of the waste, but it is probably from abroad. Is “Atlantis” a new “Columbia” disaster waiting to happen?

For those who don’t remember, back in 2003 Space Shuttle Columbia burst in flames at an altitude of 63 Km during the re-entry phase of the mission. The shuttle and the bodies of the 7 crew members were scattered above several states. Debris found mainly in Texas and Louisiana. The problem with the shuttle back then was a small damage of one of the thermal tiles of the Shuttle, which during the re-entry to the earth’s atmosphere failed and burst into flames…

About a couple of days ago, the Atlantis SS was launched into space with the mission being the repair of the Hubble Telescope. During the Lift off, some of the thermal tiles of the Shuttle were damaged. (oh…not again!) And now scientists in Nasa are questioning the safety of the Space Shuttle’s re-entry ability!

Latest images are showing that the damage is on 4 thermal tiles of the Shuttle. Back in 2003 disaster only two tiles were damaged…

Kill Bill made in Turkey…

I thought that these things happen only in movies,

but it seems that people are this bloodthirsty also in  real life…

Unidentified gunmen wearing masks, stormed into a hall, in southeastern Turkey, where wedding guests were assembled and opened fire with automatic rifles and hand grenades.

As a result, around 42  people were killed in cold blood…

not only in movies…

There are some clues that might explain these actions – the families of both the bride and the groom included members of the state-sponsored militia, the Village Guard, set up to combat Kurdish separatist guerrillas in the area.
